BLOOMBERG REPORT INDICATES CONTINUED MAC POPULARITY

Over 21% of all federal spending now flows through Multiple Award Contracts (MAC’s), and dominates the IT sector, according to a new report issued by Bloomberg Government.  MAC’s continue to grow in popularity as the government looks for ways to reduce acquisition lead times and because of new legislation requiring task orders of $100 million or more to be competed via MAC’s.  While the total number of MAC’s leveled off in 2014 according to Bloomberg, there are still an estimated over 2,000 such vehicles.  While MAC and GWAC programs have traditionally been part of the IT sector, GSA recently expanded it to professional services through the award of its OASIS contract.  The legislative mandate may further spur the development of non-IT MAC’s at other federal agencies, even as OMB and others seek to centralize more government acquisition.  Bottlenecks at GSA could further spur MAC development in areas outside IT as agencies seek to reap the benefits of MAC use without the hiccups that can come from GSA.
