THIS WEEK’S LIST HAS ONE ITEM: TREAT YOUR PEOPLE WELL

Instead of our occasional “Top 5”-type of list, this week we have just one thing for contractors to follow – Treat Your People Well.  No, we’re not suddenly holding ourselves out as human resources officials, but rather making an important point about how to minimize the chances that you’ll get a whistleblower suit.  The number one source of a False Claims Act case against a government contractor is a whistleblower, typically a current or former employee who feels that he or she wasn’t listened to or treated badly.  It’s so much easier, and cheaper, to listen to someone with a concern before they walk out the door.  Let your employees know their input is valued, even if it’s anonymous.  Make sure you follow up on concerns.  Keep people in the loop about major changes about your firm’s approach to federal business. Compensate fairly.  More work in the short-term?  Maybe.  A time and money saver down the road?  Definitely!  To quote CSN&Y:  “You who are on the road/ Must have a code that you can live by.”
