LOOKING FOR LAST MINUTE FY’15 BUSINESS? HERE’S WHERE TO GO & NOT

The State Department spends 55% of its total fiscal year budget at the end of the fiscal year, much of it in September.  Close behind it are Interior and the Social Security Administration with 48% spent in the same time frame.  These three agencies provide great opportunities for companies seeking last minute IT business, especially on bread and butter mid-sized projects.  Conversely, the Departments of Energy, HUD, and DOD have already obligated most of their dollars, as have the Air Force and NASA.  Keep in mind, though, that DOD and Air Force numbers are much higher than other agencies, so although data show a high percentage of spending already done, there are plenty of opportunities left given the amount of real dollars in play.  Top line pet projects that haven’t been able to be launched are one area where spending will happen between now and October 1st.  This suggests that favorites like cyber and cloud will be in play.  So, too, will buys to ensure the continued viability of legacy systems.  FY’15 should finish strong, which is good since FY’16’s start is increasingly cloudy.
